For an unscrupulous Nazi villain in Battlefield 5, EA chose the name Wilhelm Franke, who actually belonged to a German anti-fascist and social democrat.
This more than bad name choice has caused criticism especially in German-speaking media. EA has meanwhile announced that they will change the name, and apologized for linking their character with the historical figure. Opposite Vice , they stated in a statement:
"We have become aware that the name of one of our elite fighters, Wilhelm Franke, bears the same name as a real resistance member in Germany during the Second World War. We apologize because we certainly do not intend to be disrespectful of him. We're in the process of changing the name of our elite fighter in the game. "
Furthermore, EA explains that Franke is not a Nazi, but a German soldier. Despite the Iron Cross on the chest of the elite fighter there is no political statement to be made, as with all German soldiers in Battlefield V. Also, there is a public statement from EA:
"The aforementioned elite fighter, Wilhelm Franke, whose name we will change, is not a Nazi, but a German soldier similar to the one already in the game. In Battlefield V we do not make political statements related to actual World War II events and there are no swastikas in the game. "
Whether the difference between Nazi and German soldier is solely due to the swastika, is at least debatable. Other than the change of name, that is absolutely necessary.
Original news from 4 June 2019:
Battlefield 5 chooses the name of a resistance fighter for a Nazi villain
The new Nazi villain in Battlefield 5 is an explosives expert and is named after Wilhelm Franke. However, this name was also borne by a Dresden anti-fascist and SPD member during the Second World War.
The fact that this new character in Battlefield 5 is a cold-blooded killer with a facial prosthesis and a Nazi general without scruples, the short introduction trailer leaves no doubt.
Battlefield V - Elites: Wilhelm Franke | PS4.
The name of the Nazi is Wilhelm Franke and this has the same name as a Dresden resistance fighter and social democrat, as Dom Schott reported on ArchaeoGames .
The historical figure Wilhelm Franke
Wilhelm Franke was a teacher before the seizure of power by the Nazis. He taught his student much about the values of democracy and was a self- confessed Social Democrat. Both led to him losing his job as part of the establishment of the Nazi regime and henceforth operating the cigarette business that he and his wife had opened as a secret meeting place for the SPD . In 1944, the resistance group flew open and Franke was arrested along with his family. They died in an English bombing on Dresden a few months before the end of the war. Even today, a street in Dresden and a sandstone block near the school at which he had taught reminds of the resistance fighter Wilhelm Franke.
"Googling"
First of all, the two characters except the name share absolutely nothing. The short biography of the Nazi general reveals only that he went to the war school in Hamburg and wearing the mask because of severe facial injuries.
Would a simple Google search, the conceivably bad name choice prevented? Probably yes. Because a search immediately finds a Wikipedia entry about the historical figure. Dice should deal more sensitively with the topic and look closely at a topic such as the Second World War, whom they give which name.
Dom Schott denies Dice that she no longer "with full respect for history" bypasses by this faux pas, as the developer repeatedly stressed. Dice has not commented on the bad name choice yet. Maybe just a very popular name combination was chosen for the time and then not further researched. In the worst case, Dice did not care. Therefore, Dice should speak up soon and also think about changing the name, because this respect is due to Wilhelm Franke.
